I am often asked: “Where is your photography studio located?” My answer: mostly in the Arboretum.

Upon arriving at a photo session, I was told that kids would be eating black berries as the last thing, so as not to mess up hands, attire and all in site….. We soon found out that eating berries was the first thing on the agenda and it was non-negotiable. Hey! Kids know their priorities….

This was about the tail-end of the Northwest Summer. This was about a child’s joie de vivre. This was about a friendship between a dog and a boy. This was about the Stillaguamish River that was still inviting during the first days of September. This was about my own nostalgia for my beloved Baltic Sea and the carefree moments I loved as a child.

There is a saying: “You learn something new every day”. Recently, I photographed a boy who learned about a centipede. While looking at the photos my friend added: “looks like the parents learned something new too”! BTW, the centipede was released into a patch of grass and she walked away fast from the photo session. After all she does have 100 legs!

On Mother’s Day time, I am posting a few images from recent family photo session with Jo and Rosa. Jo is a stellar Mother. She is kind, loving, patient, devoted, driven, hard working and beautiful. We made portraits on the beach near their home in West Seattle. Wearing leopard print clothes on the beach seemed like an odd idea, but I insisted. Then we moved on to the urban areas with different types of attires on. After receiving the images Jo wrote:
“Anita, I am so blown away. I don’t even know what to say!!! I feel so blessed to have such wonderful photos of Rosa and me. Thank you. Thank you. How do I choose which ones to print when so many are so good???!!!

Gas Works Park in Seattle is a public park that offers so much for a family photographer. Kids love its hills, rusty pipes, colorful walls, railings, stairs, and huge leaves that fall down in Autumn time. I enjoy photographing there and over the years I have acquired many images of kids and families while working in that historic location. Here are just a few of them to illustrate how varied the park is with its backdrops and things to do for busy toddlers including watching practicing skateboarders and wandering geese…

This was the busiest family photo session, ever. We run. We chased. And we chased some more. Kingsley’s parents brought along many props: magnificent sunflowers, balloons, bubbles, a guitar, a lollipop (a huge one). We used all of them while composing images and also those that we found as we photographed: for instance an old armchair left behind on the beach. We started off with filtered, milky, even light, then we kept working with a golden Autumn sun. After we parted I was exhausted, however, I knew I captured many images from various angles that were worth the chase, the running and and the play…..

Each time I photograph families (even though I have many years behind me as a photographer) I face an almost a paralyzing thought: “what if I never find a light or ambiance to make it happen”… Then I consciously enter a mind compartment that stores openness about it all and things start to unfold: with each exposure I get excited with the light, with angles, with the way children walk, smile, say their things and all gets rolling just fine.
